PORT TOWNSEND — Imagination on wheels will race for the coveted Mediocrity Award, among others, during the 30th annual Port Townsend Kinetic Skulpture Race today.
The race of outrageous self-propelled crafts built of duct tape, Styrofoam and anything else at hand will begin at “low noon” at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St., where teams of entrepreneurs will begin lining up their strange vehicles at 10:30 a.m.
During today’s race, which finishes at 5 p.m. at City Hall and is quickly followed by an awards ceremony at the American Legion Hall, the hand-built vehicles must navigate sand, mud and hills and float on water.
Checkpoints are:
■ Port Townsend Salmon Club ramp near the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., at about 1 p.m.
■ Fort Worden State Park beach “Kwick Sand” at about 1:30 p.m.
■ Dismal Bog at Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., at about 3 p.m., followed by the “Homage to the Kosmic Rooster” at Cedar Street off San Juan Avenue at about 3:30 p.m.
■ Kinetic Coffee at 520 Kearney St. at about 4 p.m.
The Mediocrity Award is given to the racer who finishes in the middle of the pack.
