PORT ANGELES – Backers of an indoor field house for soccer and tennis – stalled around the time voters sacked a municipal aquatics center proposal last year – have revived the project, with an apparent bargain in the process.
Instead of shelving out millions, Port Angeles could get a donated, air-supported field house from the East Coast for only the cost of shipping.
The idea will be posed Thursday to the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission at 5 p.m. in the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St. (Editor’s note: The time stated in Wednesday’s PDN is in error. It will be corrected in Thursday’s edition.)
Then the proposal will be presented to the City Council next month – part of a fast track supporters say the project needs to take advantage of the offer.
The air-supported building measures 296 feet long and 118 wide, and is 40 feet high at its peak.
It includes lights, blowers and heating and air conditioning systems.
The building is being offered by the Pacific Northwest division of the U.S. Tennis Association to a tax-deductible nonprofit organization in the Pacific Northwest.
The only expense would be shipping it from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
