The Hawaiian Chieftain is coming to Port Angeles later this summer. But first it will dock in Port Townsend today.

PORT TOWNSEND — The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain will dock at the Northwest Maritime Center in downtown Port Townsend today and offer several tours and passenger sailings through Thursday.

After that, the topsail ketch will travel to Port Angeles for a July 13-19 visit.

The steel-hulled sailing vessel built in 1988 was designed to resemble early colonial-era passenger and coastal sailing ships that traded among coastal cities and towns on the Atlantic coast.

Usually the Hawaiian Chieftain accompanies the Lady Washington, a full-scale 1989 reproduction of the 18th-century colonial trading ship and Revolutionary War privateer of the same name.

This year, the Lady Washington is undergoing hull restoration in Aberdeen and will be out of service until early August.

In September, shipwrights in Port Townsend will complete the restoration work when the Lady Washington has its biennial haulout.

This weekend, all tours and sailings on the Hawaiian Chieftain will be from the pier at the maritime center at 431 Water St.

The ship will be open for walk-on tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Walk-on tours do not require a reservation.

A $3 donation is requested for tours.

The Hawaiian Chieftain’s crew offers two types of cruises: three-hour adventure sails and two-hour evening sails.

The adventure sail is described as “a living-history experience, with demonstrations of tall-ship handling, sea shanty singing and maritime storytelling.”

The evening sails are billed as romantic excursions during a Puget Sound sunset.

Afternoon adventure sails will be from 2 p. m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $39 per person.

Evening sails will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Tuesday.

Tickets are $39 per person for Saturday evening’s sail and $29 for Tuesday’s sailing.

The Hawaiian Chieftain will sail at 8 a.m. Thursday from Port Townsend to Port Angeles’ City Pier.

Passengers on the six-hour cruise will be served a meal.

Tickets for the cruise cost $78.50 per person.

While in Port Angeles on July 13-19, the Hawaiian Chieftain will offer similar tours and sailings.

Tours of the tall ship will be available at 4 p.m. July 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 and 17, and from

1 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 18 and 19.

The ship’s tours are offered for free, but a $3 donation per person is appreciated.

Afternoon adventure tours will be offered from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 14 and 15.

Tickets are $39 per person.

Evening sailings will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18. Tickets are $29 per person.

The Hawaiian Chieftain will depart Port Angeles at 8 p.m. July 19 for an eight-hour, one-way sail to Bellingham.

Tickets are $78.50 per person and include a meal at sea.

Advance tickets for all sailing trips are available at www.historicalseaport.org or by phoning 800-200-5239.
