Cannons will boom and crews in period costumes will swashbuckle when the tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain pull into Port Angeles and Sequim later this month.
The ships, home-ported in Aberdeen, will visit Port Angeles for six days beginning Wednesday, April 14, and have a one-day stop in Sequim on Wednesday, April 21, during their 2010 Port Tour of Washington State.
The ships also may dock at Port Townsend, but arrangements have not been finalized, said Joel Follansbee, media director for the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, which owns the ships.
“We are hoping they will be able to travel to Port Townsend but are awaiting confirmation that facilities are available,” he said Friday.
Arrival scheduled April 14
The two ships are scheduled to arrive at City Pier in Port Angeles late in the day April 14 and offer public sails, walk-on tours and educational programs until they set sail for the John Wayne Marina in Sequim early on Tuesday, April 20.
Tickets can be purchased now for three-hour public sails.
Also, passage can be booked on the sail from Port Angeles to Sequim.
In Sequim, no public sails are planned, but crews will offer dockside tours on April 21 before the ships leave the next day for either Port Townsend or Friday Harbor.
Launched in 1989, the Lady Washington is a full-size wooden replica of a brig that accompanied Capt. Robert Gray’s expedition to the Pacific Northwest in 1788.
The official ship of the state of Washington, the modern Lady Washington has appeared in several movies, including the 2003 “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
The Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical 19th century merchant trader.
Launched in 1988, the steel-hulled vessel was built for trade in the Hawaiian Islands.
Upon arrival in Port Angeles, the ships — which last visited the city in 2008 — will fire a cannon salute.
Battle sails — in which the two ships engage in a mock sea battle — are scheduled at 2 p.m. April 17 and 18.
