THE FOURTH: Unexpected rain fails to dampen spirits in Port Angeles; no rain on the parade in Forks (go figure) — [**Photo Gallery**]

Spirits were high on the Fourth of July in Port Angeles despite that fact that it did rain on the parade.

Initial forecasts predicted no rain.

“The [weather] system was just a little bit wetter than we thought,” said Allen Cam, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.

“[On Thursday], it looked like the system was going to be pretty much dry.”

The sun was shining on the West End for the grand parade for the Forks’ Old Fashioned Fourth of July, which started at noon.

“It was a beautiful day,” said Mark Soderlind, chairman of the Forks Old Fashioned Fourth of July Committee. “Good time had by all.”

Cam said weather service rain gauges across the North Olympic Peninsula collected much less than an inch of rain Friday evening, seen in Port Angeles and Port Townsend.

Rain gauges in Forks and at the Quillayute Airport and one between Port Angeles and Sequim all saw three-hundredths of an inch of rain Friday night, Cam said.

Forecasts for today are for mostly cloudy skies for most of the Peninsula and a 30-40 percent chance of rain, Cam said.

Monday is expected to bring sunnier skies, Cam added.

“We’ll be warming up and drying out in the coming week,” he said.
