PORT ANGELES — Loren Krause, kneeling, Dan Welden, right, and Tom Swanson, at the controls, use a tractor to weigh Welden’s winning pumpkin in the Evergreen Country Estates neighborhood’s annual giant pumpkin contest Sunday.
Welden’s entry tipped the scale at 264.8 pounds.
The contest in a neighborhood south of Port Angeles saw 10 entries, with five of them weighing over 100 pounds.
Last year’s winner, Robin Swanson, came in second with a 171-pound pumpkin.
Welden, who started the friendly contest 12 years ago and has won three times now, each year gives his neighbors pumpkin sprouts he has started from seeds from the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers.
The growing season starts around May 1, and the neighbors gather for the weigh-in and a pumpkin potluck party each fall.
