Thieves ‘mine’ precious metals from Port Angeles vehicles

PORT ANGELES — Jason Demott didn’t make it work one day last week after thieves mined his Toyota pickup for the precious metals in its catalytic converter.

His was one of three Toyota pickups reported shorn of their catalytic converters in Port Angeles early Thursday morning.

Demott, 29, hopped into his truck, parked at his Glenwood Street home, intending to drive to Mill Creek Construction, where he works as a carpenter.

“I turned the key over and it sounded pretty rough,” he said.

He looked underneath the truck, “and all I saw was parts on the ground . . . and the converter was missing.”

“I find this kind of disgusting.

“You have it parked in your own yard, and you kind of think you are OK there.”

He said he didn’t go to work that day, because of the theft.

Two other Toyota pickups were stripped of their catalytic converters in the Cherry Hill area, north of Lauridsen Boulevard and south of Eighth Street, on Thursday morning, said Officer Duane Benedict of the Port Angeles Police Department on Saturday.
