PORT ANGELES — Five thousand law enforcement officers are expected to attend Monday’s public memorial service for slain U.S. Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks.
Donna Nemeth, a Forest Service spokeswoman, said Wednesday that delegations are expected from across the United States.
“My understanding is from all around the nation,” she said.
Prominent among the visitors will be K-9 units, Nemeth said.
Fairbanks was the Forest Service’s only K-9 officer in Washington state.
Details of the service still were being completed by a command team working in the Clallam County Courthouse as of Wednesday.
However, plans announced on Tuesday said the officers will gather at the old Kmart Plaza at U.S. 101 and North Masters Road east of Port Angeles.
A separate cortege of family members will go to Civic Field from the Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth Street, to ceremonies that will start at 1 p.m.
Civic Field is on Race Street between Second and Fourth Streets east of downtown Port Angeles.
