PORT TOWNSEND — A special three-day filing period for positions that don’t have any candidates for the Nov. 8 general election ends today.
Three positions remain on the Jefferson County’s general election ballot that no one filed for during the regular filing week that ended last Friday.
William P. Gallant filed Thursday for the open Gardiner Fire District No. 5, Commissioner Position 1 seat that had no takers last week.
The special filing period will continue at 8:30 a.m. today and end for good at 4:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.
If no one files, the position will be stricken from the general election ballot, the incumbent will stay in office, and the position will come up for election in 2013.
If the incumbent resigns, the commission or board on which he or she sat will appoint a member, and the position will be up for election in 2013.
Needs candidates
The following seats still lack any candidates:
■ Queets Fire District No. 7, Commissioner Position No. 3, incumbent Cliff Hay.
■ Brinnon Cemetery District No. 1, Commissioner Position No. 1, incumbent Karl Springer.
■ Gardiner Cemetery District No. 3, Commissioner Position No. 3, incumbent Richard A. Quinnell.
On Wednesday, the first day of the extended filing period, Shirlee Beck filed for the vacant Quilcene Cemetery District, Commissioner No. 2 position.
If three or more candidates file for a position, they all advance to the Aug. 16 primary, and the top two vote-getters will head to the Nov. 8 general election.
There are 48 positions up for election Nov. 8.
