Tickets on sale for Feb. 27 heart-health luncheon in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Tickets are on sale for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation’s eighth annual Red, Set, Go! Heart Luncheon.

The luncheon, presented by the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.

Individual tickets are $50 for the luncheon, which will have the theme “Take Exercise to Heart: Be Your Own Super Hero.” A table costs $400.

Proceeds will go towards the purchase of cardiac exercise equipment at OMC.

“We encourage everyone to attend this wonderful event,” said Karen Rogers, foundation board president.

“We have sold a lot of sponsorship for the event, and therefore, 100 percent of all money raised at the luncheon will go towards local cardiac service care.”

The keynote speaker will be Dr. John L. Mignone, who is working at Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute in Seattle with a specific focus on its advanced heart failure program.

Swedish established the program because of a growing number of patients diagnosed with heart failure, which affects nearly 5 million people in the nation, according to the OMC Foundation.

Mignone, who has expertise in cardiac stem cell methods and treatments, is writing the “Heart Regeneration” chapter for the third edition of Heart Failure: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease.

In 2008, the OMC Foundation launched a three-year campaign to raise awareness of heart health for women on the Olympic Peninsula.

That led to the foundation hosting an annual event to inspire women to become more educated about how to improve their heart health.
