PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend School District is planning two public tours, of Grant Street Elementary and Mountain View Elementary, to show the community why school officials want voters to approve a $33.8 million construction bond.
The first tour will be at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Grant Street Elementary at 1637 Grant St.
The second tour of the school is scheduled at 5 p.m. April 10.
The bond election will be on May 20.
Revenue from the bond would go to constructing a new facility at the Grant Street campus next to the current facility.
Mountain View school will be closed at the end of the school year in 2010.
The Grant Street location will house all the elementary students in the district.
The Port Townsend School Board decided upon replacing the school, if voters will approve the funds, after taking into account the expected costs of renovation to the current facilities at Grant Street.
Estimates indicate that retrofitting the old school to take on the additional students would cost $29.8 million while a new facility would run $32.5 million.
