LAKE SUTHERLAND — Two dead fir trees, one about 230 feet high, that had towered above U.S. Highway 101 for decades were taken down Thursday in a daylong operation that slowed traffic through the area.
“I’m really glad it’s over,” said Rob Fly, foreman for Asplundh Tree Expert Co. of Kenmore.
“Those trees were 85 to 90 percent deadwood. If they had come down, they would have killed someone,” Fly said.
Asplundh was hired by the state Department of Transportation’s Port Angeles office to take down the snags on state right of way, three years after a nearby property owner requested their removal for safety reasons.
U.S. Highway 101 was closed in both directions beginning at 9 a.m. so a Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 crew could take down the power lines paralleling the highway.
