PORT TOWNSEND — For the Jefferson County commissioners, naming a link of trail for the late Rick Tollefson was as easy as a walk in a park.
After all, Tollefson spent years helping to build and improve the county’s parks, and was instrumental in establishing Larry Scott Memorial Trail in Port Townsend.
“I know that he would be very, very honored to have a trail named after him,” Tollefson’s daughter, Zoë, told the commissioners Monday before they approved naming it Rick Tollefson Memorial Trail, a stretch planned to connect H.J. Carroll Park and Bob Bates Recreational Fields in Port Hadlock and Chimacum.
The trail, which could run up to a half-mile, is being designed and could begin construction in a year, county officials said.
It will include a bridge over Chimacum Creek, near the confluence of the creek’s east fork.
Tollefson, 60, died Dec. 19, ending a six-month struggle with cholangiocarcinoma.
He was president of Tollefson Builders, which he founded in 1977.
