Trial date of teen mom accused of killing infant son postponed five months

PORT ANGELES — The trial date of Lauryn Last, a 16-year-old charged in the death of her infant son, has been postponed until September.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge George Wood on Friday reset the April 20 murder trial for Sept. 14.

Last, who had moved to Port Angeles from Colorado in October, is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder with a second degree option in the Dec. 30 death of her infant son.

The teen pled not guilty on Jan. 16, and has maintained her innocence.

A trial was originally scheduled for March 2 but postponed because of an ongoing investigation.

In a series of recent status hearings, prosecuting attorney William Payne and defense lawyers John and Suzanne Hayden have indicated they are not prepared to go to trial this month because more evidence is emerging.

In Friday’s status hearing, Payne said the prosecution will need at least three medical expert witnesses in the five- to six-day trial.

Defense lawyers on Wednesday filed a supplemental demand for discovery on evidence from the infant’s autopsy.

The autopsy was performed by the Pierce County Medical Examiner in Tacoma.

Last is being held on $500,000 bail at the Clallam County Juvenile Services Detention Facility in Port Angeles.

Another status hearing is scheduled for May 15 at 1:30 p.m.
