Trip of the Week: Where modern works meet mother earth — in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — It’s a unique Northwest art exhibit — a walk in the park, framed in nature.

Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s Art Outside exhibit is open for its fourth season, and features 12 new works by 10 artists woven into pockets of the five-acre Webster’s Woods.

The exhibit, adjacent to the fine arts center building, can be found off Lauridsen Boulevard, east of Race Street.

Look for the city reservoir tank and the rusty spherical steel statue called “Pliny” by Mark Stevens. That’s where you park.

The exhibit is located on the five-acre estate of the fine arts center founder, Esther Barrows Webster, former owner of the Peninsula Daily News’ predecessor newspaper, Port Angeles Evening News, and radio station KONP.

The center, formerly the Webster home, is at the high point of the property. There, indoor art is exhibited.

Just this year, the Washington Recreation and Park Association honored Webster’s Woods with a Spotlight Award of Excellence as one of the state’s four best new parks projects in municipalities.

The lighthouse was built in 1878 when Congress approved $8,000 for the light and foghorns. Although the facility is still an active U.S. Coast Guard station, the equipment is monitored and operated remotely and no keepers are present. Regular tours on Saturdays and Sundays will resume in May. (Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
