PORT ANGELES — Come Aug. 19, one will be a queen and one will be a princess.
Until then, the two Port Angeles High School sophomores who are the 2010 Clallam County Fair’s royalty will be kept very busy.
Marissa Lee Ann Rose Wilson, 15, and Stephanie Ann Lindquist, 16, will be crowned at 7 p.m. on the first day of the four-day fair, which has as its theme this year “A Cluck, A Moo and Carnival Too!”
This will be first time in several years that the coronation will be held during the fair at the grounds at 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles, said Laurie Davies, Clallam County Fair Board member, who is assisting Christine Paulsen in organizing the royalty events.
In the past, the coronation has been conducted before the fair begins.
“We’re putting the coronation back at the fair,” Davies said.
The queen will receive a $500 scholarship, and the princess a $400 scholarship.
And the contest for the coveted queen’s crown has already begun.
The two queen candidates met the Clallam County Fair Board on Wednesday, the first judged event in the long process of deciding the make-up of the fair royalty, Davies said.
Spring Tea
The public will meet the candidates, who are both members of the 4-H Silver Spurs Horse Club, at the Spring Tea in the fairgrounds’ Exposition Building on April 17.
Tickets will be $5.
For the next few months, the two candidates will attend parades and other pageants and contribute community service through volunteering to food banks and participating in Relay for Life, Davies said.
At the coronation, each will give a 5-minute speech and answer questions.
All the points during that judged event, and those leading up to it, will be added up to see who will be queen and who will be princess.
After they are crowned, the queen and princess will have duties throughout the fair, Davies said.
Wilson, the daughter of Mathew and LaDona Wilson, is sponsored by Airport Garden Center.
She plays the violin at Port Angeles High School and is involved in the equestrian team and drama club.
She intends to attend Washington State University, majoring in veterinary science and minoring in musical performance.
Lindquist, the daughter of Ron and Laura Little, is sponsored by Swain’s General Store.
She participates in the swim team and the orchestra, and volunteers at local nursing homes where she plays musical instruments.
She plans to attend Running Start at Peninsula College, and then a university to study medicine.
The judges of the two girls are Sarah Aubin and Heidi Murphy of Port Angeles and Judie Lawson of Sequim.
