Two men hurt in separate pedestrian-vehicle collisions in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Two Port Angeles men were injured Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in separate vehicle-pedestrian collisions at two city crosswalks.

James Matheny, 67, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the 5:04 p.m. Tuesday collision at West Eighth and South D streets, Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada said.

Matheny’s wife, Cheryl, said Wednesday her husband had surgery at Harboview Medical Center in Seattle.

She said Matheny’s neck was broken in three places, his collarbone was fractured and he received stitches on his elbow and head.

“He’s going to have months of therapy,” Cheryl Matheny said.

“The doctor is saying he will be here five days and might have to go to a rehab center.”

Viada said driver Deirdra Jesionowski was cited for lacking insurance.

Matheny was wearing camouflage clothing when he walked across the street in an unmarked crosswalk.

Viada said the rain and Matheny’s clothing “are some pretty significant mitigating factors” in the collision.

“There’s no indication the driver was drinking or using drugs,” he added.

Westbound traffic at Eighth and C streets was shut down while medics were tending to Matheny, according to the collision report.

Further information on the collision was unavailable.

A vehicle-pedestrian collision also occurred at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Viada said.

Pedestrian Kyle Johnson, 31, was injured while crossing an intersection at 115 E. Front St., according to the collision report.

He was crossing north from the southwest corner of the intersection when a northbound vehicle turned left and struck Johnson in the crosswalk.

Johnson, who had a head injury, was transported to Olympic Medical Center where he was treated and released, Viada said.

Sunday Edose, 34, of Port Angeles was issued an infraction for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
