ELDON — Eldon Store clerk Michelle Kenning fielded telephone calls Thursday afternoon inquiring about the landslide that had closed U.S. Highway 101 near Lilliwaup earlier this week.
Has the slide been cleared? Is the highway open yet?
Local residents and others often check with the store at because owner Craig Hatch contacts state Department of Transportation officials regularly for status reports, Kenning said.
Transportation workers plan to officially open at least one lane of the highway today (Friday) after jersey barriers are installed in the hillside lane to keep vehicles away from the slide zone.
That is welcome news to Kenning and other business owners who depend on the ribbon of highway along the western shores of the Hood Canal for their livelihoods.
