PORT ANGELES — A congressional delegation continues working to stop a $3-per-passenger immigration fee from being collected from ferry passengers traveling to Canada.
Unless it is killed, beginning Feb. 27 passengers who ride the MV Coho auto-passenger ferry between Port Angeles and Victoria will see fares increase 35 percent, from $8.50 to $11.50 for adults.
Child fares would almost double, from $4.25 to $7.25.
The money would be used for increased seaport security inspections mandated by the federal Patriot Act.
“The senator’s position is that the fight isn’t over,” said Jennifer Crider, spokeswoman for Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Mountlake Terrace.
“We will keep working to prevent this because it is such an important issue.”
