PORT TOWNSEND — A fast-moving brush fire has burned an estimated 30 acres in the Beckett Point area on Discovery Bay this afternoon. An East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesperson said the blaze is about 70 percent contained.
It is threatening nearby homes. Television helicopter coverage showed flames and heavy smoke in the woods on hills above the enclave of Beckett Point southwest of Port Townsend. Homes are scattered in those woods.
The fire was reported to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue at about 3 p.m.
Jefferson County Sheriff Tony Hernandez told KIRO-TV that the fire was believed to have started by youths shooting off bottle-rocket fireworks.
An earlier report erroneously put the fire as large as 300 acres.
