UPDATE — Car crashes into Sequim Post Office

SEQUIM — The Sequim Post Office will offer no counter service at least through today, said Steve Allen, postmaster.

An 11:30 a.m. car crash into the office has closed the counter, although customers can access boxes inside.

The front parking lot and front entrance of the office at 230 S. Sunnyside Ave., is closed. Access is through the side door on Maple Street.

No one was hurt when a Subaru Legacy station wagon driven by Patricia Melear, 80, crashed into the front of the office and stopped in the lobby.

The driver apparently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, police said.

EARLIER STORY

SEQUIM — An 80-year-old Sequim woman was unhurt when she drove her newer model Subaru Legacy station wagon into the front entrance of the Sequim Post Office early this morning.

No one was hurt inside the post office building at 230 S. Sunnyside Ave., when the vehicle driven by Patricia Melear careened into structure.

“It’s fully planted in the lobby,” Sequim Police Lt. Sheri Crain said.

The driver apparently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, Crain said, and somehow drove at an angle around the protective barriers in place to prevent such crashes.

An officer was on the scene this morning investigating the crash.

“There were probably some physical limitations,” Crain said of the driver.
