Chase’s online banking service returned to service late Tuesday evening. The bank said it stemmed from a technical problem — not a security issue.
The service went down Monday night, potentially affecting its 16.5 million customers who bank online including those with accounts at Chase Banks in Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Sequim. It was back online about 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Chase spokesman Thomas Kelly couldn’t specify the exact time service was disrupted.
The bank will work with any customers who had online bill payment deadlines they couldn’t meet because of the outage, Kelly said. He also urged Chase customers to use the telephone banking service, which was operating normally, as were its 15,500 ATMs.
“In the meantime, we encourage customers to either call us at 800-935-9935 or go to a branch if they have immediate needs.”
Online bankers who log on to its website today, http://www.chase.com, were met with a note that said: “Our website is temporarily unavailable. We’re working quickly to restore access. Please log on later.”
Chase’s active online customers nationwide — including those on the North Olympic Peninsula who were transferred after Washington Mutual was seized by the federal government and then acquired by JPMorgan Chase & Co. in 2009 — have grown by an average annual rate of 42 percent since 2006, according to a presentation to investors by Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon in New York City today. More than 3.7 million households use the online website to pay their bills.
Dimon, who Tuesday promoted a new application for Apple Inc.’s iPhone that allows customers to deposit checks over the phone, apologized for the system shutdown during his talk.
A spokesman said the bank “will work with customers” who were unable to make payments on time because of the shutdown.
