PORT ANGELES — A man is in custody after telling authorities that he planted a bomb at the downtown federal building.
Port Angeles police were questioning Johannes L. Helgeson, 41, of Port Angeles, said Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith. Helgeson was then booked into Clallam County jail for investigation of threatening to bomb or injure property, a felony.
The Richard B. Anderson Federal Building at First and Oak streets was evacuated after the threat was made at 1:52 p.m., he said. First Street between Valley Street to Laurel Street was also blocked while the building was searched.
The search came up with nothing, Gallagher said, and the road was reopened at 2:36 p.m.
Gallagher said Helgeson posed the threat at the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
The State Patrol is sending a bomb-sniffing dog to scan the building, which remains evacuated, he said.
Among federal offices in the building are the Border Patrol, Customs and Social Security.
