MENLO PARK, Calif. — A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit off the main Japanese island of Honshu, the U.S. Geological Survey said this afternoon.
USGS originally reported the earthquake as 6.9 magnitude.
The quake was centered 74 miles southeast of Morioka, Japan, at a depth of 24 miles, it said.
There was no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The epicenter was about 200 miles from Mutsu City, where a sister city delegation from Port Angeles is currently visiting. There are no reports of damage in Mutsu City.
