QUILCENE— A collision this afternoon involving two motorcyclists sent both drivers to hospitals, the State Patrol said.
The collision at about 3:30 p.m. was at Milepost 302 of U.S. Highway 101 south of Quilcene.
One driver was unconscious and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.
The other driver, hurt less severely, Winger said, was taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend.
The two injured men were part of a group of seven motorcyclists from Alberta, Canada.
Interviewed by a Peninsula Daily News reporter, the group said the two men collided on a curve after slipping on sand that was on the highway.
They speculated that the sand had been spread on the highway to sop up oil or gasoline after another accident.
