UPDATED — ‘Hard landing’ for passengers and crew on Coho ferry in Victoria (with video link)

VICTORIA — A Black Ball Ferry Line official said there was no damage or injuries after a “hard landing” of the Coho ferry on Thursday.

Ryan Malane, Black Ball’s vice president for marketing, reported that the Coho came into the Victoria dock too quickly.

Malane termed the 2:15 p.m. incident a “hard landing,” not an accident.

Malane did not think that any passengers felt the Port Angeles to Victoria ferry hit the pilings. He said there were no complaints from passengers.

CHEK-TV in Victoria broadcast a video taken by a person on the dock which shows the Coho glancing off the dock pilings and going into its slip.

Malane noted that the ferry’s captain knew that the ferry was approaching the dock too quickly and sounded an alarm horn.

Black Ball employees took about an hour to inspect the ferry and pilings and found no damage, he added.

The inspection delayed the ferry’s 3 p.m. departure for Port Angeles until 4 p.m.

The Coho left Port Angeles at 6 p.m. for its return to Victoria, 40 minutes late.
