SHINE — The Hood Canal Bridge was reopened tonight after it passed a grueling, eight-hour mechanical test of its new draw span.
The process of opening and closing the floating bridge’s draw span 20 consecutive times began at 2 p.m. today and ended just before 10 p.m.
The first car crossed the bridge at 10:19 p.m.
“This is what we’ve all been waiting for,” said Dave Ziegler, principal engineer, before the testing was completed.
The Department of Transportation will continue to provide transportation services for opening day and one day after to help travelers return to their normal commute.
But the Port Townsend to Edmonds car ferry will end at the completion of tonight’s run.
