SEATTLE — The University of Washington has announced that it will no longer require standardized test scores, such as the SAT or the ACT, for incoming students.
According to a press release, the requirement had been temporarily suspended for students matriculating in fall 2021 due to decreased availability of testing sites in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current announcement makes the change permanent at the Seattle campus, the Bothell and Tacoma campuses are currently reviewing their admissions policies regarding standardized testing.
School officials cite recent studies that show little or no correlation between standardized test scores and success at the university.
Studies also suggest that requiring test scores for admissions can create barriers, both real and perceived, for students from low-income backgrounds, students of color and women.
