Organizations across the Peninsula will conduct a variety of services in observance of Veterans Day this weekend.
Gardiner
• Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Northwest will host a memorial service for Construction Mechanic Third Class Marvin Shields at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The service will be at Shields’ grave at the Gardiner Cemetery, 137 Gardiner Cemetery Road, Sequim.
Shields was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Born in Port Townsend, Shields grew up in Discovery Bay. He died from wounds he sustained on June 9, 1965, while defending his position and his comrades in the battle of Dong Xoai, Vietnam.
Due to limited parking at Gardiner Cemetery, shuttle services will be available for attendees.
Shuttle pickup and drop-off will take place at Gardiner Community Church, 1040 Old Gardiner Road, Sequim.
Carlsborg
• A monument will be rededicated the 10 Clallam County men who died in World War I at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Carlsborg Family Church, 481 Carlsborg Road, Sequim.
The monument was erected in 1924 by Toussent Benoit, a private citizen, in front of the Carlsborg School, a building now occupied by the church.
Forks
• American Legion Post 106 will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Forks Gold Star Family Memorial at the transit center, 144 E. E St., off South Forks Avenue.
The post will also host a Veterans Day Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Legion Hall, 651 E. Division/Maple St.
Pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and beverages will be served for dine-in or takeout. A donation of $10 is suggested. Veterans will be served free of charge.
Port Angeles
• The Clallam County Veterans Association and the U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a regional Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles.
The annual observance includes patriotic music from several choirs and bands as well as an address by Rear Adm. Charles E. Fosse, the commander of the 13th U.S. Coast Guard District.
Visitors may enter through the main gate beginning at 9:45 a.m. Visitors must present a government-issued identification such as a driver’s license, military identification or passport.
No firearms or other weapons are permitted on the base, which will close to the public at 1 p.m.
Port Townsend
• The Port Townsend Summer Band will perform a free concert of patriotic music at 10:30 a.m. Monday the The American Legion, Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post 26, 209 Monroe St. in Port Townsend.
