VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Port Angeles gathers, mails blankets to U.S. soldiers

PORT ANGELES — Sixty blankets of donated fleece are headed to a military hospital in Afghanistan because of the efforts of women with Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 1024.

The women collected donations at the Clallam County Veterans Center in Port Angeles on March 19, and on Tuesday mailed the finished blankets to a military post office, which will send them to the hospital, said Venay Money, president of the Port Angeles-based auxiliary.

Four women brought in donations of either finished fleece throws or bags of fleece yardage, Money said.

Fifteen finished blankets were donated. The auxiliary’s work crew fashioned 45 blankets from the donated fleece, she said.

Money complimented her fellow volunteers: Pat Foster, Julia Brown, Pat Bahde, June Smith, Lindy Meek and Karen Key, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9 commander.

“During these work parties, we have so much fun,” Money said. “We always order pizza, root beer, and one woman brings a rum cake.”

The need for fleece blankets is urgent and ongoing, Money said.

“We got a letter from across the water from a person at a veterans hospital saying they were in desperate need of fleece throws, which go over to the wounded soldiers when they are brought in,” Money said.

If anyone has more fleece they want to donate, the auxiliary will take it, she added.

For more information or to donate, phone Money at 360-681-7085.
