LAST WEEK WE posted the three winning films — “Pink,” “Because It’s There” and “Hareloom Seeds” — in the PDN-PDQ Three-Minute Film Competition, sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News and the Port Townsend Film Institute.
The filmmakers won prizes and had their three videos shown at the recent Port Townsend Film Festival.
This week we’re posting eight other videos entered in the competition that got special citations from the judging panel.
Virginia Bogert, curator of Seattle’s Post Alley Film Festival and president emerita of Women in Film Seattle, explains how she and the other two judges evaluated the entries:
“What we as the judges looked for in the three-minute film submissions were films that told a story, had wit, creativity, were well acted and had overall pretty darn good production values.
“We were also mindful of the initial rules that were laid out for the competition which included clearance of music rights and a length of three minutes or under.
“There were some entries that we considered footage, albeit engaging; some entries whose music rights were not cleared, some that were akin to travelogues and home movies, and some that were trailers of longer films and, unfortunately, did not meet the competition’s requirements.
“All in all we enjoyed all the submissions. There were quite a few films we liked a lot for many and varied reasons — but our mandate was to choose only three for the festival.”
