PORT ANGELES — A water main leak continued to cause traffic slowdowns late Tuesday afternoon for motorists traveling westbound into Port Angeles on U.S. Highway 101.
The break forced the closure of two of three lanes of Front Street for about 1,000 feet and was causing delays where First and Front streets merge at the city limit just east of McDonald’s restaurant, Deputy Chief Brian Smith said.
Cars also were being detoured to turn at Baker Street, Smith said.
City Public Works and Utilities Department personnel were trying to find the source of the problem, the police department said.
“They are unable to tell what the problem is and when they might be able to resolve it,” Smith said.
Traffic had backed up “well beyond” the water main leak earlier in the afternoon but was flowing smoothly by 4:30 p.m., he said.
