WEEKEND: Art show, fly-in, environmentalist talk among offerings on Peninsula

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, May 23.

A young environmentalist will speak in Port Townsend, the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe will open an art show in Port Angeles, and pilots will gather at Sekiu Airport for a Memorial Day Weekend Fly-In Lunch.

PORT TOWNSEND

12-year-old speaker

PORT TOWNSEND — Twelve-year-old motivational speaker Milo Cress of Boulder, Colo., will talk to students and adults about environmental sustainability today and Saturday.

Today, Milo will speak at Sunfield Farm and Waldorf School, 111 Sunfield Lane, Port Hadlock, at 9 a.m. and at Chimacum Elementary School, 91 West Valley Road, at 11 a.m.

On Saturday, he will make a presentation at the Port Townsend Farmers Market, corner of Lawrence and Tyler streets, at 2 p.m.

Milo has garnered a national reputation as an environmental activist and won awards for inventions and his initiative to reduce plastic waste through a “Be Straw Free” campaign, which he started when he was 9.

Work party at Kah Tai

PORT TOWNSEND — A Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park work party is slated at the park, 12th and Haines streets, on Sunday.

Join the team anytime between 9 a.m. and noon.

Volunteers will pull scotch broom and pick up trash.

To join the party, park at the lot near the bathrooms and walk east toward the Benedict Street entrance southeast of the small pond. Look for a white Chevy pickup truck with the bright-green volunteer sign.

Wear work clothes and bring work gloves. Bring pruners if possible.

Water, tea, treats, garbage bags and scotch broom pullers will be provided.

Community yoga in PT

PORT TOWNSEND — A community yoga class will be held at Room to Move, upstairs at 1008 Lawrence St., from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Those who are on a fixed income and are curious about yoga are invited to this by-donation class.

PORT LUDLOW — An open garden will be held at Chimacum Woods, 2722 Thorndyke Road, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Plant and pie sale

QUILCENE — The Quilcene-Brinnon Garden Club’s annual fundraising plant and pie sale will be held at the Quilcene Masonic Hall, 170 Herbert St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday,

Admission is free.

All proceeds benefit the community in the form of small grants.

Trees, flowers, vegetables, ornamentals, exotics, perennials, edibles, native plants, garden art, books and more will be for sale, along with pies, cookies and coffee.

There will also be a “Kid’s Corner” craft project with the YMCA and orchid and fountain-making demonstrations.

Basic composting

SEQUIM — Veteran Master Gardener Betsy Burlingame will present “Basic Composting for the Home Gardener” at the Master Gardeners’ Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The presentation is part of the Class Act at Woodcock Garden series, which is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed.

Burlingame will discuss the essentials of making compost, what it takes to maintain it and the benefits of it.

Master Gardener Bill Teel will demonstrate what’s involved in making compost.

Visitors can learn about putting together worm bins, what to feed worms and how to keep worms producing Vermil compost.

Waste Reduction Specialist Meggan Uecker will be available on hand for further information and will have handouts on reducing and reusing.

The educational series is sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Program and the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County.

Sailing by Ravens

SEQUIM — Alaska salmon fisher, naturalist and poet Holly J. Hughes will offer passages from her new book, Sailing by Ravens, during another free Fourth Friday Reading tonight.

Writers on the Spit, a Sequim-area group, invites lovers of literature to the reading at 6 p.m. at Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Co., 157 W. Cedar St.

Hughes will be the featured writer up first, and then the microphone will open for five-minute readings of poetry and prose.

SEQUIM — The Young Eagle Rally originally set for May 17 has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The rally will be at Sequim Valley Airport, 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane.

Young aviation enthusiasts ages 8-17 can bring their parents along for free airplane rides.

Klallam art show

PORT ANGELES — The Lower Elwha Klallam tribe will open an art show and present a panel discussion today at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 E. First St.

The public is invited to the opening from noon to 6 p.m. today and to the artists’ discussion at 4:30 this afternoon.

With paintings, carvings, prints and jewelry by Roger Fernandes, Linda Wiechman, Alfred Charles Jr. and Darrell Charles, the exhibit is a response to the freeing of the Elwha River through removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams.

The Klallam art show will stay on display through next Friday, May 30.

Relay For Life barbecue

PORT ANGELES — Jim’s Pharmacy, 424 E. Second St., will host a Relay For Life fundraising barbecue for Team Bethany from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Ball Park hot dogs will be served in the parking lot.

All donations go to Team Bethany.

PORT ANGELES — The Jimmy Hoffman Band will supply the music for another dance at the Eagles Aerie, 2843 E. Myrtle St., tonight.

Admission is $5 for the event from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Sons of Norway dance

PORT ANGELES — The Sons of Norway host a social dance with instruction every Sunday at their lodge, 131 W. Fifth St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

All ages are welcome to an evening of ballroom, swing and folk dancing.

The cost is $2 for members and $3 for nonmembers.

Instruction is from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., with dancing to follow.

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Genealogical Society will host a Spring Cleaning Garage Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday.

TAFY fundraisers

PORT ANGELES — The Answer for Youth, or TAFY, is having a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The sale will be at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St.

Banana bread, cinnamon rolls, breads and fudge will be offered.

TAFY also will offer car washes at Angeles Pawn, 619 E. First St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

TAFY is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer-based organization that assists at-risk and homeless youths.

SEKIU — Pilots and other members of the public are invited to gather at Sekiu Airport for a Memorial Day Weekend Fly-In Lunch on Saturday.

Burgers and hot dogs will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the airport.

The meal is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $1 for children younger than 6 and free to pilots.

Proceeds from the fly-in lunch will go to the Rocky Hinkle Memorial Scholarship Fund.
