WEEKEND: Book launch party on Saturday in Sequim

SEQUIM — Lindy MacLaine, a former staff member at the Sequim Library, has embarked on a new path: author and creativity coach.

This Saturday, she’s going all-out to celebrate new role No. 1 and her first book, The Curse of the Neverland.

Live music by Kate and Ethan Powers, face painting with Marjorie Newberg, door prizes and refreshments will be part of MacLaine’s Neverland launch party from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the upstairs room above the Nourish cafe, 101 Provence View Lane.

The writer will read from and sign copies of her adventure tale, while admission is a suggested $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.

Proceeds will go to the Sequim Soroptimist Club, which has already chosen The Curse of the Neverland for its “Aim High, Reach for the Stars” project with fourth- and fifth-grade girls at Greywolf Elementary School in Sequim.

The book is a modern-day story of Neverland, as in Peter Pan’s domain — starring girls.

“The seed for the book was planted,” MacLaine said, “when I was 11 years old, playing Peter Pan in a community theater production.”

In her Neverland, “the magical island is dying of a fairy’s vanity, a pirate’s greed, and a dragon’s appetite.

“Its only hope lies with Peter Pan’s orphan granddaughter, Piper, and her motley group of fellow foster girls.”

Neverland is geared toward girls age 8 and up — as well as their aunts, mothers and grandmothers, MacLaine adds.

MacLaine’s debut book grew out of her collaboration with friends in Sequim, including Kelly Lenihan, an artisan publisher and author, and photographers Jan and Kay Kepley, who did the cover art.

Alexi Rampp-Tafft, a Sequim Middle School student, posed for the book’s cover photo.

The Curse of the Neverland will be available for purchase for $25 at Saturday’s launch party. It can be ordered at local bookstores or from Amazon, and can be requested at local libraries; the book’s website is www.piperpanandhermerryband.com.

MacLaine added that she left the Sequim Library at the end of January to focus on her other new venture, as a life-purpose and creativity coach.

Her website for this is lindymaclaine.com.
