PORT TOWNSEND — A historic 143-foot former World War II rescue tug/cutter, the Comanche, will be open to the public at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is free, though donations are welcome.

Special displays include original artifacts from the Coast Guard in World War II.

CHIMACUM — Jefferson County Master Gardeners will host a plant clinic at the Chimacum Corner Farmstand, 9122 Rhody Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

A Master Gardener will answer gardening questions and diagnose plant problems.

Visitors are urged to bring in bagged samples of plant parts (healthy and damaged sections), including stems, leaves and flowers.

Rockets launched

DISCOVERY BAY — The Olympic Peninsula Rocketry 4-H Club will host the 10th annual “Pasture Blaster” at 922 W. Uncas Road today, Saturday and Sunday.

The range is open from noon to 6 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The entry fee is $3 for adults and free for kids. Fees are good for all three days with wristbands.

The launch is open to the public.

Events include a spot landing, a streamer duration, a cash-only silent auction, a drawing for model rocket kits, a kids crayon duration contest and more.

Trophies will be awarded for competitive events.

There is free RV/tent camping and a comfort station on site, plus rocket and food vendors.

Back to School Fair

SEQUIM — School supplies will be distributed during the Back to School Fair at the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula at 400 W. Fir St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Supplies were donated during a Stuff the Bus event Aug. 2 in the Walmart parking lot.

Shoppers were invited to purchase school supplies and drop them into cardboard containers.

Cash donations also have been received and are being used to buy items to fill in what is still needed.

Donations of school supplies can be dropped off at the school district office at 503 N. Sequim Ave. or at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club.

Rummage sale

SEQUIM — Assured Hospice is having a rummage sale at the Sequim office, 24 Lee Chatfield Ave., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The sale is to support the hospice’s comfort therapy program,the company said, adding that 100 percent of sale proceeds go to funding the therapies.

Assured Hospice is part of LHC Group, a national provider of post-acute-care services.

SEQUIM — Around Again, 22 Gilbert Road, will offer a free “Passive Solar Refrigeration” class at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Visitors can learn how to refrigerate without electricity and learn how to build a solar refrigerator, as well as how to make a “Zeer Pot” for outside refrigeration.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District’s 2014 Back to School event for families in need will be at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 East 12th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The district is working with Parent Line/Lutheran Community Services NW and other local service organizations to host the event.

Many supplies and opportunities will be available free to K-12 students, including school supplies, haircuts, community services resources and additional back-to-school information.

There is no need to sign up for the event in advance. Volunteers are available to assist families on site.

PAHS car wash

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School choirs are conducting a car wash at the Chevron gas station, 601 E. First St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Washes will be offered for donations.

The event is to raise funds for their 2015 spring break trip to New York City.

More than 100 members of four choirs are planning to sing at several locations, see some Broadway shows and visit the Statue of Liberty during the trip.

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Outdoor Club announces hikes Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s hike will be of the Klahhane Ridge Trail, a moderately difficult hike of 5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,700 feet and a high point at 6,046 feet.

On Sunday, the group will hike the Grand Ridge Trail, a moderately difficult hike of 5 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 700 feet and a high point at 6,600 feet.

Community picnic

JOYCE — The Crescent Grange, 50870 state Highway 112, is sponsoring the Joyce Community Picnic beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The grange will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings with soda, water, tea, coffee and service.

The community is asked to bring salads, beans, chips and dessert.

After the meal, several games are planned: money in the haystack, a watermelon-eating contest and three-legged races.

BLOCKFest at Forks

FORKS — A free BLOCKfest event is planned at the Peninsula College Forks Extension site, 481 S. Forks Ave., from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

BLOCKfest is an interactive math, science and literacy event for parents and their children aged 8 months to 8 years.

During the event, five block stations will be set up, allowing parents and their children to spend time at each stop.

Each area features a different kind of block. They range from cubes to planks to unit, foam and brick blocks.

A trained volunteer facilitator will be at each site to support the block play, which is intended to support math and science learning in young children and help prepare them for kindergarten.

Drag race, car show

FORKS — West End Thunder will host drag racers at Forks Municipal Airport, South Forks Avenue, on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will also be a Show and Shine car show and the Arlen Pearsall Memorial Race.

Admission for spectators is $10 each day; children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Registration for the Show and Shine is $15 each day, and drag race registration is $30 daily.
