WEEKEND: Concert to benefit Juan de Fuca Foundation

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Today” refers to Friday, July 12; Saturday is July 13; Sunday is July 14.

PORT ANGELES — As executive director of the Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts, Dan Maguire presents the Juan de Fuca Festival over Memorial Day weekend and concerts year-round — but he’s often onstage, not backstage.

Maguire is part of Dan & the Juan de Fuca Band and Redwing, a pair of local groups.

Saturday night brings an unusual event: Maguire playing in both. He’ll appear with his bandmates at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., for a Juan de Fuca Foundation benefit show starting at 8 p.m.

There’s no cover charge to listen and dance to the music, though donations to the foundation are welcome. 2013 Juan de Fuca Festival T-shirts and tickets to a prize drawing will be available for purchase too.

Dan & the Juan de Fuca Band almost exclusively performs songs composed by Maguire over the past two years. While he sings and plays rhythm guitar, Clark Driese is the electric lead guitar man, Zorina Wolf supplies the percussion and Eric Neurath plays bass.

“It’s great to finally have an opportunity to play these songs beyond my living room,” quipped Maguire.

Redwing, meanwhile, has more of a folk sound, with the players trading lead singing and lead licks. Maguire and Doug Parent play guitar alongside Jenny James on fiddle, while Neurath reappears to add his bass lines.

Many Redwing tunes are traditional folk fare, though Parent includes some of his originals in the set.

For more information about the Barhop show, the Juan de Fuca Foundation or its season of concerts — to start with the Scots-Irish duo Men of Worth at the Peninsula College Little Theater on July 27 — phone 360-457-5411 or visit www.jffa.org.
