WEEKEND: Dance with Parkinson’s class set in Dungeness Schoolhouse

SEQUIM — Heeding requests for more classes, the Dance with Parkinson’s group will add sessions in the Sequim area at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, starting Saturday afternoon (July 20).

Specially trained teachers Corrie Befort and Deborah Magallanes will give the 90-minute class beginning at 1 p.m., and everyone with Parkinson’s disease — or other neurological disorders — is welcome.

The Dungeness Schoolhouse session is in addition to the Dance with Parkinson’s class offered monthly at the Sons of Norway hall, 131 W. Fifth St. in Port Angeles.

The Port Angeles class, which has been drawing people from across Clallam and Jefferson counties, will start at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Give it a try

Coordinator Darlene Jones encourages those who have never attended a session to give it a try.

“It’s not partner dancing, but it is moving your body in response to music,” she said, adding that the two instructors are masterful at helping people enjoy the class, whether they do it standing or seated.

Wheelchairs and walkers are also welcome.

These classes have live music by pianist Linda Dowdell, who is “wonderful,” Jones added.

While the sessions are designed for people with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, stroke-related conditions or severe arthritis, non-affected people can enjoy them, too, she said.

The suggested donation is $10 per class, while spouses and caregivers are invited to join in for free.
