Egg engineering, an ice-cream social and a cleanup day at the Sequim Y are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Egg engineering

PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Library will host a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) activity at 1 p.m. today involving eggs.

The free event will be held at the main library, 620 Cedar Ave.

Children ages 6 to 11 will be invited to build containers that could keep a raw egg from breaking when dropped, gaining a better understanding of inertia, momentum and resistance as they test their contraptions.

Materials will be provided.

PORT TOWNSEND

Free, discounted swim

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer a discounted open swim from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Everyone is invited to swim for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

The whole pool will be dedicated to play. Noodles, rings and other floating toys will be available. No lap lanes will be offered.

Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

The pool will host its second Saturday and Sunday free swims from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday; 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. will be lap and exercise swim for adults only.

Recreational swim will be held from 2:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. for all ages.

Waterfront tours

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will host free waterfront boat tours today.

During the free 30-minute boat ride on the center’s motor launch, visitors can see the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend from the water.

Tours will leave on the hour and half-hour from the center’s dock, 431 Water St.

The launch will accommodate six to eight people in each tour — first-come, first-served.

Donations will be accepted.

Conversation Cafe

PORT TOWNSEND — Conversation Cafe will meet today in Port Townsend.

Conversation Cafe meets at 11:45 a.m. every Friday at Alchemy Restaurant at Taylor and Washington streets.

Buying food is not required.

The gatherings conclude before 1:30 p.m., and all are welcome.

Making quilts

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Quilts of Valor will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Creative Union Fabrics, 112 Kala Square.

Dues are $5 annually, with a $5 donation at each meeting.

Members meet to share patterns and fabric and to work on projects.

No quilting experience is necessary, and newcomers are welcome.

There is no requirement to join for participation.

Pilothouse simulator

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will open its pilothouse simulator to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The pilothouse simulator at the center, 431 Water St., allows users to take the wheel of a virtual Coast Guard cutter, navigating through waves, darkness and other boat traffic.

Country dance

PORT TOWNSEND — There will be an English country dance at the Rosewind Common House, 3131 Haines St., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The dance will be taught by Nan Evans, with music provided by the Rosewind Country Dance Band.

A potluck dinner will follow.

There is a $5 suggested donation.

No street shoes; dance shoes or slippers are acceptable.

The Rosewind Common House is a fragrance-free facility.

Movie series

SEQUIM — The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will continue its summer movie series as part of the 2016 summer reading program with “Air Bud Special Edition” at 2 p.m. today.

The series will provide “out-of-the-sun” family entertainment, snacks and movie trivia.

Book sale

SEQUIM — The Friends of Sequim Library will hold their monthly book sale in the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will be more than 4,000 items in stock in the inside and outside sales areas. Items include paperback and hardcover mysteries, oversized art books, a group of eight KCTS cookbooks, a three-volume set of Burnham’s Celestial Handbook, bicycle instruction and route books, and a bike training stand.

A large collection of books about Japan will also be available on Japanese language, history, art, travel, literature, architecture, garden design and bonsai.

Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the library.

Unbroken talk

SEQUIM — Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.

According to a news release, “Unbroken tells the gripping true story of Louis Zamperini, a former Olympian and U.S. airman who was the [sole] survivor when his bomber crashed into the sea during World War II and had to face thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft and, beyond, a trial even greater.”

Accordion social

SEQUIM — Accordion players are invited to join fellow musicians, enthusiasts and dancers for an afternoon of music and fun from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Shipley Center.

The featured player for the second half of the afternoon will be David Emter with Sally Frish at the center, 921 E. Hammond St.

Emter became interested in playing the diatonic button accordion after retiring from a 33-year career with the U.S. Air Force. Frish usually joins Emter on the electronic keyboard.

Admission will be a voluntary donation of $2 or $3 to help pay for the hall rental and support the featured player.

Spruce up the Y

SEQUIM — Volunteers are sought to help spruce up the Sequim Y (formerly known as the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Participants are asked to bring gloves, rakes, shovels or other yard equipment and to wear long-sleeved shirts and comfortable, close-toed shoes.

Golf tourney

SEQUIM — The North Olympic Salmon Coalition will host a fundraiser golf tourney Saturday at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course.

Registration is $80 and includes cart, green fees and balls, boxed lunch, prizes and goodie bags.

Check-in and registration will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at the course, 1965 Woodcock Road.

The tourney will include games, prizes and a raffle, plus a hole-in-one prize of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado from Ruddell Auto Mall.

All funds raised will benefit the coalition’s place-based, restoration and engineering middle school education program across the Olympic Peninsula.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

Ice-cream social

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange will have an ice-cream social from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Banana splits and sundaes are $5 each at the grange, 290 Macleay Road.

Proceeds will benefit the Sequim Prairie Grange Building Fund.

PORT ANGELES — Cabled Fiber Studio, 125 W. First St., will host a custom-dyed yarn trunk show featuring Chrysalis Carter from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. A reception will begin at 4 p.m.

Under the label “Chrysalis Loves Textiles,” Carter’s yarns are custom-dyed and from small local fiber growers on the Olympic Peninsula including her own. She blends wool and camelid fiber, including llama and alpaca, for knitters, spinners and weaver.

Carter is an active member of the local weavers guild and has been a custom yarn dyer for the internationally recognized Sundara Yarns.

CLALLAM BAY — The fifth annual Clallam Bay Comicon will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Lions Club building.

The event is free at the Lions Club, 90 Bogachiel St.

Canadian artist, writer and illustrator Leanne Franson will be the special guest creator. She will share her experiences in art, publishing and pottery.
