WEEKEND: Fort Townsend trail run scheduled Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — The 14th running of the Fort Townsend 4-Mile Trail Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Registration for the run, which is open to the public, will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Friends’ Barn at Fort Townsend State Park off state Highway 20 in Port Townsend.

The registration fee is $15 for adults and $10 for children 16 and younger.

Awards will be presented for first-place overall male and female, and the first three finishers in eight age categories.

Brian Taylor, a ranger at Fort Flagler State Park, began the event 14 years ago.

Perfect for competition

A runner himself, Taylor viewed the trails at Fort Townsend as perfect for a competitive trail run.

Friends of Fort Townsend maintain the 6.5 miles of park trails and continue to sponsor the event.

Members of the PT Running Club handle course layout and run finisher statistics.

Trails used for the event are part of the park trail system that was laid out and prepared by Larry Stevens, ranger at Fort Townsend State Park in the 1970s.

A state Discover Pass or one-day pass is required to park at Fort Townsend.
