WEEKEND: French cinema series begins Saturday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Rose Theatre is soon to have a “Rendez-vous with French Cinema,” with the first of many film showings starting Saturday afternoon at the movie house at 235 Taylor St.

The “Rendez-vous,” a presentation of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance Films, this program “attests to the sheer variety and vitality of contemporary French filmmaking,” according to the Rose news release. The lineup includes key figures of France’s next New Wave, such as directors Sebastien Betbeder, Serge Bozon and Justine Triet.

For more information, see www.RoseTheatre.com, phone the Rose business office at 360-385-1039 or the box office at 360-385-1089.

Movie schedule

Here’s the schedule.

■   “Age of Panic” (“La Bataille De Solferino”): During a time of great political change, a frazzled young mother tries to keep it together on the home front in this Justine Triet picture, a mix of comedy and documentary-style energy. Showtime: noon Saturday.

■   “2 Autumns, 3 Winters” (“2 Automnes, 3 Hivers”): Arman is 33 and ready to make a change, starting with a run in the park. When he literally bumps into Amelie, he’s dead-set on making a connection with her. Over two autumns and three winters, Arman and Amelie share incidental moments, unexpected accidents and unforgettable memories, all of which define who they are. Directed by Sebastien Betbeder. Showtime: 2 p.m. Saturday.

■   “Cineast(e)s”: For the first time, 20 French women filmmakers come together to talk about their profession and their status in the movie industry. Directed by Julie Gaylet and Mathieu Busson. Showtime: noon Sunday.

■   “The Marchers” (“La Marche”): This film reconstructs a decisive event in the history of French radical politics: a Mitterand-era demonstration against racism and inequality in which nine people marched 930 miles from Marseille to Paris. Directed by Nabil Ben Yadir. Showtime: 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

■   “Under the Rainbow” (“Au Bout Du Conte”): The arrival of Prince Charming in a young woman’s life is complicated by a very different — but equally alluring —man in this contemporary fairy tale with twists and sharp existential humor. Directed by Agnes Jaoui. Showtime: 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 29.

■   “Tip Top”: An eccentric internal affairs agent (Isabelle Huppert) and her mousy new partner are summoned to investigate the murder of an Algerian informant in this screwball procedural. Directed by Serge Bozon. Showtime: 2:10 p.m. Saturday, March 29.
