Hikes, picnics and music are among the activities planned on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

PORT ANGELES

Bring Your Own Art

PORT ANGELES — Studio Bob’s 13th biannual Bring Your Own Art show will be Saturday and Sunday.

Art for the show can be dropped off between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at the studio upstairs at 118½ E. Front St.

The reception for the show will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. The show will be up from noon to 3 p.m. the following day.

There will be a no-host bar and refreshments in The Loom, next door to the gallery.

The show is for everything from professional pieces to those that have never been displayed.

The cost is $5 per piece, with a maximum of three entries. No commission is charged if artists choose to sell their art.

‘Lunch in the Garden’

PORT ANGELES — Veteran Master Gardeners Bill Wrobel and Jeanette Stehr-Green will lead a “Lunch in the Garden” walk from noon to 1 p.m. today.

The free walk will be through the Fifth Street Community Garden at 328 E. Fifth St.

The two will talk about soil types and proper watering; growing warmth-loving crops such as tomatoes, corn, basil and melons; renovation of June-bearing strawberries; and harvesting broccoli, onions and garlic.

Master Gardener David Rambin will join Wrobel and Stehr-Green to talk briefly about fall and winter gardens.

The event is part of “Lunch in the Garden,” an educational series sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second Friday of each month through September.

Outdoor Club hike

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Outdoor Club will hike the PJ Lake Trail on Saturday.

This is a moderately difficult hike of 1.8 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet and a high point of 5,050 feet.

Hurricane Hill hike

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers will walk up Hurricane Hill at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to join.

Carpooling is an option from the start point, which is at William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St.

The walk is 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles). The elevation at the top is more than 5,000 feet.

This hike is on well-maintained trails and a short distance along a road.

There is a restroom at the parking area, as well as at the start point. No pets are allowed.

The hike is free for people who don’t wish to get the AVA credit; however, hikers will need a National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.

Bring a lunch, water, sunglasses and a camera.

Coin club open meet

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Coin Club will meet in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The meeting is open to the public.

The group will discuss collecting and evaluating coins and currency.

Air study discussion

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Region Clean Air Agency senior air monitoring specialist Odelle Hadley will present the final results and analysis from the Clallam County Air Quality Saturation Study at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The presentation will be in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Hadley will present the results of the yearlong study examining the sources and distribution of atmospheric pollution in Clallam County.

The study used data from four air monitoring devices in Clallam County, in addition to one previously located at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

SEQUIM

Monthly book sale

SEQUIM — The Friends of Sequim Library will hold their monthly book sale at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Of special interest this month are a large number of railroad books, juvenile horse books (fiction and nonfiction), Grassroots Motorsports magazines, woodworking instruction and designs, and more than 250 German language fiction books.

Flea market offered

SEQUIM — The Dominion Terrace Homeowners Association plans a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The flea market will be at the clubhouse at 1301 S. Third Ave. and Norman Street.

Items have been donated by residents and include housewares, baked items and items for a raffle.

Book discussion

SEQUIM — The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig will be the topic of the Sequim Library’s monthly book discussion from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The free meeting will be at the library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Doig revisits the American West in the early 20th century in his book.

Copies of the book are available through the library catalog or at the library checkout desk.

Roller derby bout

SEQUIM — Port Scandalous Roller Derby will play against Jet City’s Carnevil of Everett at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., on Saturday.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the bout starting at 6:30 p.m.

Pre-sale tickets are $10 and get attendees in early at 5:45 p.m.

Tickets at the door are $12.

Picnic, auction set

SEQUIM — An “Old-Timey Picnic Auction” will be held at Jardin du Soleil, 3932 Sequim-Dungeness Way, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The cost is $15 per family. The fee is refunded with the winning of a basket.

Prizes include artisan-crafted picnic dinners. Visitors can dine from Maggie May’s fresh foods truck.

Auction proceeds go to pre-school scholarships.

Growing raspberries

SEQUIM — Master Gardener Jeannette Stehr-Green will present “All About Growing Raspberries” at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Stehr-Green will talk about the life cycle of raspberries and how it affects fruit production and pruning needs.

She will share information on raspberry varieties recommended for the Pacific Northwest and describe their ideal planting site.

A discussion on planting and care of raspberries, including trellising, is planned, as well as a demonstration on how to prune raspberry canes to increase productivity and minimize diseases.

Yoga class set Sunday

SEQUIM — A Farm Flow yoga class will be held at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

There is a suggested donation of $8; first-timers are admitted free.

The class is led by instructor Julia Buggy.

The class features alignment cues, core work and moving with breath, followed by a deep relaxation.

All ages and levels are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring their own mats.

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool, 1919 Blaine St., will open for a free swim from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

An adult must accompany children younger than 8 in the pool.

This free swim is sponsored by Hope Roofing and Construction and is the final in a series of four free “Second Sunday Swims” organized by the JeffCo Aquatic Coalition in collaboration with the YMCA and the city.

QUILCENE — Center Valley Animal Rescue will host a free summer open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The rescue is located at 11900 Center Road.

Visitors can tour the ranch and see recent changes, meet the newest animals and enjoy snacks and beverages.

Cindy Daily from Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue will bring birds.

Raffles for gift certificates, homemade pies and cakes, and restaurant gift certificates are planned.

PORT LUDLOW — Jefferson County Republicans are invited to meet 2014 candidates for public office at a barbecue at Port Ludlow Marina, 1 Gull Drive, on Sunday.

The theme for the picnic is “You’re Invited to a Republican Party.”

The event will begin at noon with a lunch of Southern pulled pork prepared by chef Larry Carter.

The cost for the luncheon is $15 per person.

Attendees will be introduced to Republican and nonpartisan candidates who are running in primary races for offices in Jefferson County, state and regional districts.
