WEEKEND: Olympic Theatre Arts fetes birthday of the Bard on Friday in Sequim

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, April 4.

SEQUIM — “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Merchant of Venice,” “As You Like It”: These and other Shakespeare works are the stuff “An Unusual Evening in Sequim” is made of.

Olympic Theatre Arts actors in a short, free program will perform excerpts from Shakespearean love sonnets, tragedies and comedies at 6:30 tonight in celebration of the Bard’s birthday later this month.

This “Unusual Evening in Sequim,” the first of an occasional series, will take place at the playhouse, 414 N. Sequim Ave., during Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk.

Sequim writer and actor Karen Hogan is assembling the program, which will star Susan Dwyer, Keith Curtis, Tom Darter, Richard Hendricksen, Carl Honore and his daughter, Christie Honore, a senior at Sequim High School.

After they offer their chosen bits of poetry and drama, the performers will invite the audience to join them in reciting a Shakespearean-style birthday greeting to the Bard.

Shakespeare was born April 23 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, 4½ centuries ago.

“And there will be cake,” Hogan added.

In this program, each actor will choose a piece of Shakespeare that he or she finds especially delicious.

Short program

They won’t go on and on; Hogan predicted the performances will run a total of 45 minutes.

This will give patrons time to visit the venues participating in downtown’s gallery walk from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A map can be found at www.sequimartwalk.com.

“I call it an unusual evening because it’s going to be spontaneous,” Hogan said.
