Art party
PORT ANGELES — A free reception with digital animator and local artist Bryanna Gentry is set for 6 p.m. tonight at Oven Spoonful, 110 E. First St.
Gentry, a San Francisco Academy of Art student, is displaying her work at the cafe throughout this month.
Auditions slated
PORT ANGELES — Auditions for the Port Angeles Community Players production of the comedy “Dearly Departed” will be held tonight and Saturday.
The auditions will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both evenings at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Parts are available for men and women of all ages in the large cast.
“Dearly Departed,” written by David Bottrell and Jesse Jones, is described as “a rollicking black comedy centered around the funeral of a trashy Southern patriarch and his wildly dysfunctional family.”
“Dearly” will open Sept. 19 and run through Oct. 6 at the playhouse.

Basecamp series
PORT ANGELES — Chris Gutmacher and Andy Stevenson, co-presidents of the Peninsula Trails Coalition, will discuss “The Olympic Discovery Trail” at 6 p.m. today.
The talk is part of the Basecamp Adventure Talks series offered at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.
The hotel launched the series of free talks to showcase the many outdoor activities and locations that can be explored on the Olympic Peninsula throughout the summer.
Speakers include ecologists, tour guides, storytellers, filmmakers, historians, anglers and mountaineers.
Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and happy hour “Basecamp” drink specials will be offered.
The last presentation for the Basecamp Adventure Talks will be by Kathy Monds, Clallam County Historical Society director, on July 26.
Memorial Cruz-In
PORT ANGELES — The eighth annual Darlene Marihugh Memorial Cruz-In will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Cruz-In will be at Cowboy Country, 923 E. First St., and Puerto de Angeles Family Mexican Restaurant, 940 E. First St.
It is open to all hot rods, customs, classics, muscle cars and motorcycles. Between 100 and 150 vehicles are expected.
The entry fee is $10 per car. Raffle tickets are $5 each.
All proceeds will go to scholarships for high school seniors in memory of Darlene Marihugh, a longtime employee of Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles and an avid hot rodder who died Oct. 23, 2005, at the age of 40.
Puerto de Angeles will offer menu specials, and Cowboy Country will conduct an outdoor sale in conjunction with the event.
More than 115 door prizes donated by area businesses will be given to participants displaying their cars and bikes at the event.
Highlights of the raffle will be a custom-painted and upholstered hot-rod pedal car and a waterfront room at the Red Lion Hotel in Port Angeles.
Fourteen entries will be picked for special award plaques.
Goodie bags will be given to the first 110 entries.

Open house slated
PORT ANGELES — Hartnagel Building Supply, 3111 E. U.S. Highway 101, will host a free replacement window open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Roller derby bout
PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Roller Derby will present “Fear and Rolling in Port Scandalous,” an international roller derby bout, on Saturday.
The event will be at Olympic Skate Center, 707 S. Chase St. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the bout will be at 6:30 p.m.

PORT ANGELES — A breakfast benefit and membership drive event will be held at the Elks Naval Lodge, 131 W. First St., from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Free bird walk
SEQUIM — A free bird walk will be offered in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The walk is offered by the Dungeness River Audubon Center, which will provide a naturalist to lead the walk to see and hear the birds of the riparian forest by the Dungeness River.
The birds of summer are the goal: warblers, vireos, tanagers, grosbeaks, flycatchers and others that are only here for a few months before they return to their Central and South American wintering haunts.
Attendees should bring binoculars, bird books and shoes suitable for walking on the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Pocket yacht show
PORT TOWNSEND — A free one-day boat show organized by the Port Townsend Pocket Yachters club to celebrate traditional smaller rowing and sailing boats is set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The free Pocket Yacht Palooza will be at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.
Boats belonging to several Puget Sound-area groups, including the Port Townsend Pocket Yachters and the Puget Sound chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association, will participate, along with crafts from the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and the Northwest Maritime Center’s boat shop.
Organizers are appealing to owners of other smaller rowing or sailing craft in the 8-foot to 22-foot range to participate in the event.
Participants will be invited to go on a picnic sail Sunday.
An offshoot of the boat show, a marine swap, will held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. across Water Street from the Northwest Maritime Center in the lot that formerly housed the Landfall Restaurant.
The Pocket Yacht Palooza is co-sponsored by the Northwest Maritime Center, Small Craft Advisor magazine, the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, Sage Marine, the Port Townsend Marine Trades Association and the Puget Sound chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.

Canoe journey
PORT TOWNSEND — Members of the public are invited to welcome Canoe Journey participants when they arrive for a one-day stop Sunday.
Arrival times are dependent on the tide, but the first canoes are expected as early as 9 a.m. and will continue through the afternoon.
Canoes will land at Fort Worden State Park on the beach next to the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.
Participants then will travel by van to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., to take part in tribal activities including dancing, singing and drumming.
This year’s Canoe Journey is the Paddle to Quinault. When the canoes arrive there, more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the continuous potlatch, held Aug. 1-6.
PORT HADLOCK
Salmon derby slated
PORT HADLOCK — The fourth annual Chimacum Alumni Association Salmon Derby will be held Saturday and Sunday.
The derby is open to all and will be held in Marine Area 9.
Fishing is open from dawn to 3 p.m. Saturday and from dawn to noon Sunday.
An awards ceremony will be held at the Port Hadlock Marina at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Prize winners need not be present to win.
Weigh-in will be at The Fishin’ Hole at the Port Townsend Fuel Dock, 199 Benedict St. in Port Townsend’s Boat Haven.
First place will win $1,000, second takes $500, and third-place and mystery-weight finishers will win $250. Prizes for fifth through 10th place will be donated by local businesses.
Kids can win $100 for first place, bicycles for finishing second and third.
Tickets are $25 per adult, with kids 14 and younger admitted free.
All anglers must have a ticket to participate.
Tickets are available at Four Corners Store, Westside Marine, The Fishin’ Hole at Port Townsend Fuel Dock and LPL Financial Services/Rich Gastfield in Port Townsend; Eldridge Homes Inc. in Port Ludlow; and Olympic Equipment Rentals in Port Hadlock.
Suggested boat launches are Lower Port Hadlock Boat Launch, Fort Flagler State Park, Port of Port Townsend Marina, Mats Mats Bay or Port Ludlow.
