WEEKEND: Saturday fundraiser dinner in Port Angeles to aid Captain Joseph House

PORT ANGELES — The second annual benefit to make the Captain Joseph House — a first-of-its-kind, expense-paid respite for families of those killed in military action — a reality is set Saturday.

The “Forming Foundations for Families” benefit dinner and auction for the Captain Joseph House Foundation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at C’est Si Bon restaurant, 23 Cedar Park Drive.

The cost for the live auction, raffle and dinner is $85 for general admission and $75 for active or retired military veterans.

Foundation founder Betsy Reed Schultz said Wednesday that 88 tickets for the event had been sold so far, with about 25 remaining.

Dinner includes a glass of wine and a choice of filet mignon with mushrooms, sole in parchment or tureen of roasted organic vegetables.

Proceeds will go toward phase two of the remodel to transition a former bed-and-breakfast into a retreat for families of fallen soldiers killed in action since Sept. 11, 2001.

Schultz named her foundation and the house after her son, Army Capt. Joseph Schultz, was killed in Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.

Wood framing, sunroom

Schultz said Wednesday that volunteers are busy installing wood framing for the kitchen expansion and the in-progress sunroom to the former Tudor Inn bed-and-breakfast at 1108 S. Oak St. that she once owned.

The home’s five bedrooms will be converted into three large wheelchair-accessible suites.

The finished home, now owned by the Captain Joseph House Foundation, also will have a wheelchair-accessible elevator to the second floor.

Up to three families will be hosted at a time, from Sundays to Fridays, with all expenses paid.

Volunteers using donated materials have provided the bulk of the work on the home since demolition of the interior began last year.

Schultz said last year’s dinner and auction raised $65,000.
