WEEKEND: Trio to wrap season for Port Ludlow Arts Council on Sunday

PORT LUDLOW — When John Novacek was an 11-year-old just starting to play the piano, he learned “The Entertainer,” that Scott Joplin ragtime number later made famous in the movie “The Sting.”

“From there, I moved on to classical and jazz, though I never lost my affection for ragtime,” said the pianist, recently returned from a European concert tour.

Novacek, along with his trio Intersection, will offer “Intoxication,” his own ragtime tune, at the Bay Club this Sunday. The group’s concert is billed as an “afternoon soiree,” to also bring a “West Side Story” medley, music from the opera “Carmen” and songs from the movies “The Godfather” and “My Fair Lady.”

The Bay Club, 120 Spinnaker Place, will open Sunday for a no-host reception at 3 p.m. and the performance at 4 p.m. Tickets are $24 at the venue, reached at 360-437-2208, or via www.PortLudlowArtsCouncil.com.

Intersection’s three players are classically trained: violinist Laura Frautschi studied mathematics at Harvard and then music at the Juilliard School, cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper has a doctorate in musical arts from Juilliard and Novacek has performed with Joshua Bell and Yo Yo Ma.

This is the final concert in the Port Ludlow Arts Council’s 2013-2014 season and also features an art show at the Bay Club: Carol Avoy Durbin’s display of paintings called “Many Moods.” The show, organized by the Port Ludlow Artists’ League, also will feature “Wine Anyone?,” a puzzle for viewers to solve.

Novacek, for his part, said that while he and his bandmates are busy performing with other chamber music ensembles, Intersection gives them a chance to stretch out.

“Laura, Kristina and I absolutely love what we do in this group,” he said. “We play the widest variety of music . . . Broadway and film scores, tangos, light classics, opera hits.

“There is no other show like it.”
