West End: Comments on ocean wave energy project due by June 17

NEAH BAY — Comments on the proposed ocean wave energy project off Neah Bay are due to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by June 17.

Mercer Island-based AquaEnergyGroup began pursuing permits in April for its $2 million pilot project at Waatch Point, just south of Cape Flattery.

The first buoy to monitor ocean conditions could be deployed by fall, according to company President Alla Weinstein.

The pilot project to generate electricity would follow.

The proposed project will consist of four energy-converting buoys moored two miles off Waatch Point in water 150 feet deep.

Tidal action will move the buoys up and down, creating a pumping action and pressurizing sea water directed into a turbine inside a sealed power building on the Makah Bay floor.

A 2-mile-long power transmission cable will connect to a land station containing an electric current inverter and a transformer, all connected to the Clallam County Public Utility District power grid.
