FORKS — Requests for construction bids for water treatment facilities associated with removal of the two Elwha River dams should start going out late this year.
About 25 people attended a forum Wednesday night on river restoration at the University of Washington’s Olympic Natural Resources Center.
Olympic National Park Elwha project manager Brian Winter delivered a 45-minute presentation before fielding questions for about a half-hour.
The crowd included some of the Olympic Peninsula’s notable names, including Park Superintendent Bill Laitner and Forks Mayor Nedra Reed.
“Taking the dams out is no big feat,” Winter told the small crowd.
Dealing with the multiple tons of sediment piled behind each cement structure, on the other hand, is of primary concern.
