NEAH BAY — The Makah diabetes program has been awarded three grants totaling $11,500 for a retina clinic next month.
The grants, from three pharmaceutical companies, were obtained by Dr. Eric A. Orzeck of Houston, Texas, whose father was one of the first doctors to practice in Neah Bay.
“He’s always had a heart for this area and the diabetic patients,” Leanna Wilson, a registered nurse and diabetic educator with the tribe, said Tuesday.
Orzeck will travel to Neah Bay for the Feb. 13 clinic and will present the grants then, Wilson said.
An ophthalmologist from Port Angeles will also take part in the clinic, she said.
The total amount includes a $4,500 grant from GlaxoSmithKline, a $2,000 grant from Abbott Laboratories and a $5,000 grant from Novo Nordisk.
