NEAH BAY — After five years of planning, the Makah tribe has begun construction to reroute a trail which provides northern access to Shi Shi Beach.
Construction crews will re-route the first half-mile of the trail to move it off private lands.
During the construction process, use of the trail, which has been closed for several years, will be monitored more closely, tribal officials said.
The rerouted trail is expected to be completed by Oct. 31 and will include three bridges and boardwalks to pass over muddy areas, creeks and a beaver-inhabited pond.
The new trail will help hikers legally gain access to one of the most popular beaches in Olympic National Park.
