KALALOCH — A 13-year-old Tacoma boy swept under water Monday in heavy surf is presumed drowned and the search for his body has been called off.
Olympic National Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said Tuesday the search for Vasiliy Popkov, the son of Russian immigrants, ended about noon Tuesday.
“There’s not a sign of him. He’s presumed drowned,” Maynes said. “I think that rangers will continue to monitor the beaches, probably not as intensely as has been going on.”
The boy and his 15-year-old female cousin were walking in the surf about 3:30 p.m. Monday when they were overpowered by a large wave, park officials said.
